Liverpool must enter the transfer market in January to sign cover for Virgil van Dijk, says Reds legend Jamie Carragher. The Dutch defender suffered a heavy knee injury on Saturday against Everton after a reckless challenge by Toffees goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Van Dijk will be out for the rest of the season and Carragher feels they should sign a new defender in January.
“I still felt at the start of this season Liverpool were the team to beat,” said the former Liverpool defender in talks with Sky Sports. “I think with Van Dijk being out for what looks like the whole season now, I think it’s going to be all on for Liverpool.” During the summer transfer window Liverpool were linked with a move for Napoli‘s Kalidou Koulibaly.
And Carragher always had the feeling Liverpool needed an extra defender, even while Van Dijk was still on the team. “I think Liverpool certainly have to go into the market in January, and not just because of Van Dijk’s injury, but Liverpool were weak in that area anyway. They lost [Dejan] Lovren before the start of the season now the other players in those positions are very injury prone.”
