Mesut Ozil will not be able to play for Arsenal until at least February after the club announced their 25-man squad for the Premier League. The German midfielder was also axed from the clubs Europa League squad and it is not a big surprise he has also been omitted from the club’s list to play in the Premier League.
Leaving Ozil out of the squad means that Arsenal’s best-paid player will not be able to play football for at least 11 months as he played his last match for Arsenal in March 2020 just before the coronavirus lockdown. Ozil has not made a single appearance since the lockdown was lifted in June.
It seems likely that Ozil has already played his final match for Arsenal as his contract will end in June 2021. Arsenal had to submit their squad list on Tuesday and the list must include a maximum of 17 non-homegrown players over the age of 21. Mikel Arteta had 19 players to choose from and decided to axe Ozil and former Borussia Dortmund defender Sokratis.
