Pep Guardiola hasn’t lost hope he will be able to convince Eric Garcia to sign a new contract with Manchester City and snub FC Barcelona. The Spanish defender has been linked with a move to the Nou Camp for several months and it is expected that Garcia will move back to Spain in either January or after his contract has expired in July 2021.
Guardiola, however, hopes that he will be able to convince the young defender to stay with City. “I know he wanted to leave but he’s going to stay and maybe we can seduce him in this year to extend the contract with us,” Guardiola said after the 3-1 victory. “He’s a guy who is so stable in many many things and we are so happy.”
City managed to overturn a first-half goal from Porto and secure a 2-1 win after goals from Raheem Sterling and Ilkay Gundogan. Guardiola was happy with the win. “We knew how tough it would be because Porto and Benfica are the best teams in Portugal,” he added. “They have the winning mentality, they have to win every game.”
“I was surprised they played so defensively with five at the back, we had to be patient but in the second half we didn’t concede counter-attacks, we didn’t concede set-pieces, we didn’t allow them to run. We did the perfect performance against a really good team. It is nice to win games while suffering.” City’s next game in the Champions League will be against French club Olympique Marseille.
