Positive news for Juventus as star defender Matthijs de Ligt is closing in on his return to the first team. The Dutch international has not been able to play for the Bianconeri this season after he decided to under go surgery to his shoulder during the off-season. De Ligt has been training with the first team over the past few days and he is closing in on returning to the match squad of Andrea Pirlo.
The news couldn’t have come at a better time for Pirlo after the Italian already saw Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini suffering injuries in recent weeks. Ahead of their Champions League match against FC Barcelona, Pirlo only had Merih Demiral as a central defender, though it is expected that both Bonuccia and Chiellini will be fit in time to face the Spanish giants this week.
However, the return of De Ligt is a big pro for Pirlo. In Italy it has been suggested that the former Ajax captain only needs confirmation from the club’s medical staff to be declared fit again. That means that there is a chance that De Ligt will be included in Pirlo’s match squad for the match against Barcelona, which will be played in Turin on Wednesday.
