Lionel Messi will be staying at FC Barcelona beyond his current contract, says former coach Carles Rexach. The Argentinian forward submitted a transfer request during the summer as he was looking to leave Barcelona due to a troubled relationship with the board and former president Josep Maria Bartomeu. The president has left and Rexach says he believes Messi will stay at Barcelona.
“Thanks to God, he’s been the solution to Barcelona’s problems”, Rexach said. “For me, he didn’t do the right thing with the burofax, I have to say, although I’m pro-Messi all the way. That hasn’t benefited anyone. I think he’ll stay at Barcelona if he doesn’t decide to play at another level, like leaving for Qatar, for example.”
Messi has not been linked with any clubs from the Middle-East up until now as he has been linked with big-money moves to Manchester City and Internazionale. It has been suggested that the City group, the company that owns Man City, has offered Messi a seven-year contract worth €750m. That deal includes two seasons at City in the Premier League and then a five-year stint in the Major League Soccer at New York City FC.
