Thiago Alcantara will have to earn a starting position at Liverpool, says former midfielder John Barnes. The Spanish playmaker joined the Reds from Bayern Munich this summer and his transfer brought high expectations from the fans along with it. While he impressed during his first few matches, he has been struggling with injuries in recent weeks.
Jurgen Klopp could welcome Thiago back into the team this weekend as the Spanish midfielder has returned to full training after spending a month on the sidelines. Barnes says it is no guarantee that Thiago will ‘walk’ into the starting eleven. “When you are playing regularly that is when you can cement your position within the team, but, due to injuries, Thiago hasn’t been able to do that and played only a handful of games.”
“He will be in contention to play, depending on the game. If Liverpool are facing opposition who defend in numbers and defend deep, then Thiago is the man who can create something from nothing. He is not necessarily one of the first names in the midfield three even before he was injured.” Liverpool will be returning to Premier League action after a two-week international break. The Reds will face Leicester City.
