Bayern Munich defender Javi Martinez has revealed he will be leaving the German giants at the end of the season. The 32-year-old has an expiring contract and he has admitted he wants a new challenge in the final seasons of his career. Martinez was already close to complete a return to his boyhood club Athletic Bilbao during the summer, but a deal fell through in the final weeks of the transfer window.
He then discussed his role with Bayern boss Hansi Flick and decided to stay this season. “This is not the moment to discuss what will happen in June 2021. Anything can happen. I had great years here and we will see what happens,” Martinez said ahead of their Champions League game at Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.
“I would like to try something new, no matter where, but something new before I end my career. The contract says it is the last year. I am happy to be here now and I am part of the team and that is what is important.” Martinez has been at Bayern since the summer of 2012 and he has won eight Bundesliga titles and two Champions League’s with the club.
