Bayern Munich are hoping to benefit from the financial problems at FC Barcelona with a stunning move for midfielder Frenkie de Jong. The Dutch playmaker joined Barcelona in the summer of 2019 for a reported €84m transfer fee from Ajax and the club want to build a new ‘super team’ around De Jong, who has often been compared with Dutch and Barcelona legend Johan Cruyff.
However, Barcelona are currently having financial troubles and he Spanish giants must cut back their wages by at least €150m before the end of 2021. Since the outbreak of corona in 2020 the club already had two massive wage cuts, worth around 70 per cent of their total wage expenditure. With more cuts on its way and the increasing financial problems, Barcelona could be forced to sell their star players, including De Jong.
Bayern were also in contention to sign De Jong in 2019 but the Dutch midfielder decided to reject the offer from Germany as he wanted to play for his dream club Barcelona. He recently signed a new contract until the summer of 2026 at the Nou Camp, but with the financial situation worsening Barcelona may be forced to sell De Jong. According to Marca, Bayern have already made clear they want to sign De Jong should he become available on the transfer market.
