The summer transfer window has closed its doors again in the biggest leagues in Europe. There have been thousands of player movements across Europe in what has been one of the most spectacular transfer windows ever! Not only did we see two of the best players the world has ever seen making a transfer, but also a lot of unexpected (big) moves! In this article we take a look at the top five transfers of the summer!
5. Jack Grealish to Manchester City
Who would have expected Man City to sign another star playmaker besides Kevin de Bruyne? The Belgian midfielder is considered as one of the best assist-providers in the world and you would have thought he would have been enough! Not according to Pep Guardiola and City! They decided to splash the cash on Grealish by signing him for a club record €118m transfer fee from Aston Villa. The England international did not need long to make an impression as the club’s new #10 has already scored a goal and recorded an assist in the Premier League.
4. Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United
The return of a legend at Old Trafford! Some say Ronaldo wanted to complete a transfer this summer after Lionel Messi signed for Paris Saint-Germain, but fact is that the Portuguese forward has completed a spectacular move back to Man United. He left Juventus after three seasons and two Serie A titles. He hoped to claim a Champions League with the Italians, but failed in his conquest for glory. Now Ronaldo is back at United and fans are over the moon.
3. Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea
Another return this summer was completed by Lukaku as the Belgian striker re-signed for Chelsea. Lukaku had two stellar seasons at Internazionale and in his second and final season he managed to clinch the Serie A title for the first time in almost ten seasons. The striker was then linked with a move back to the Premier League as several clubs showed interest. However, Lukaku was adamant to rejoin Chelsea, the club he left in 2014.
2. Eduardo Camavinga to Real Madrid
One of the more surprising transfers of the summer was the move made by Camavinga to Real. The youngster has been described as the new Paul Pogba and he was linked to several big clubs, including Manchester United and PSG. At first it looked as if Camavinga would be staying at Stade Rennes, but the club desperately wanted to sell the talented midfielder after he rejected to extend his contract beyond 2022. He was offered to Madrid, who then were more than happy to sign him for a €30m transfer fee.
1. Lionel Messi to Paris Saint-Germain
After Messi handed in an official transfer request last summer, no-one would have thought he would actually leave FC Barcelona. At the end of a busy transfer summer, the Argentinian decided to stay with the Blaugranas for at least one more season. During the year it looked as if Messi chnaged his mind and wanted to stay on at the club he defended for 21 years. As time progressed it became clear that while both Messi and Barcelona wanted to extend his stay, the financial situation made it impossible for them to offer him a new contract. As a result his contract expired, making it possible for other clubs to sign him on a free transfer. Manchester City and PSG were linked and in the end he signed for the French giants, completing one of the most spectacular and unexpected transfers the world has ever seen.
