Antoine Griezmann has officially closed the door at FC Barcelona after two disappointed seasons. The French forward was signed from Atletico Madrid in 2019 but he has never managed to settle in well at the Blaugranas. To sign Griezmann from Atletico, Barcelona activated his €120m release clause, but also paid another €15m to have a charge of Los Colchoneros dismissed.
Spanish newspaper Sport has now revealed the details of Griezmann’s contract at Barcelona and the results are massive. First is the fixed salary Griezmann would receive during the length of his contract. He started at €17m-per-year and then an extra million added per season towards the end of his contract. The France international also had several bonuses and clauses added to his contract.
Griezmann was entitled to another €2.5 per season if he played at least sixty per cent of the available games. Under Ernesto Valverde, Quique Setién and Ronald Koeman the forward easily managed to get that needed percentage. Griezmann would then be able to increase his income with several performance related bonuses, including player related and club related performances.
Winning the LaLiga title was good for €1.5m, winning the league title and the Copa del Rey would mean €2.5m, an amount of €3.75m euros for winning the league title and the Champions League. If Barcelona managed to win the famous treble, Griezmann would have received €4m in bonuses. In his two seasons Barcelona have paid Griezmann a total of €2m in bonuses.
Adding all the bonuses, Barcelona could have ended up paying Griezmann a total of €177m in wages and bonuses during the full length of his contract. Ultimately, the forward ‘only’ received €46.5m in total for his two seasons with the club. Sport emphasizes that only Lionel Messi earned more than Griezmann, but that the Frenchman did not earn much more than teammates like Coutinho or other teammates.
