FC Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman has explained why his club decided to both sign and sell Emerson Royal in the same transfer window. The Brazilian full-back joined the Blaugranas from Real Betis early on in the summer before completing a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur in the final week of the transfer window. Koeman has now explained why Barcelona decided to sell Emerson.
“I wanted to help the club and an example of that was the sale of Emerson”, Koeman told in an interview with Sport. “I told the club that if they could make a profit then they should sell Emerson because we have [Sergino] Dest, [Oscar] Mingueza and even Sergi Roberto. There are undoubtedly more positive than negative things. If I didn’t want him to go, I would have said: ‘No, he is not moving’.”
The Brazilian himself wasn’t too keen on leaving Barcelona this soon, as quoted by Marca: “Playing for Barcelona has been my dream since I was little. I fell in love with the club when I saw Ronaldinho play. I also thought for a long time that the club wanted to keep me. Last Sunday I started against Getafe in the starting eleven, the next day (on August 30, ed.) I went to training.”
When he arrived at the training ground he realized something was different. “There were rumors about Tottenham, that Barca had an agreement. I didn’t understand anything because I knew nothing about it. In the afternoon I got a call to come to the office because they wanted to talk to me. There I met the club management. They told me that the financial situation was not good and that it was better to sell me. I then repeated that I wanted to stay. But at some point I realized they were telling me to leave. The only two answers I could give were ‘yes’ and ‘yes’. They sent me away.”
And that has left a bitter sweet tast in the mouth of Emerson. “Do I feel used? That’s not the right word, but it hurts. It could have been different, there were better ways to solve this. I now know that they already knew they were going to sell me when they bought me. My family was stunned. We had only been in Barcelona for forty days, hadn’t packed all our stuff yet.”
