Real Madrid star Marco Asensio rejected the possibility of joining Serie A giants AC Milan and Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur this summer, reports Marca. The Spanish attacking midfielder is keen on cementing his position on the team with new head coach Carlo Ancelotti having a lot of confidence in Asensio’s abilities.
The Spanish international is now in his sixth season with Madrid and he is keen on returning to the level he displayed before a series of serious knee injuries. Under former coach Zinedine Zidane Asensio had troubles getting enough game time, which meant he missed out on Spain’s Euro 2020 squad. Under Ancelotti he hopes for a better chance this season.
Despite missing the Euro’s, Asensio was part of Spain’s Olympic team that made it to the final in Tokyo this summer. The 25-year-old returned late to Spain, but has been used by Ancelotti in the first few games of the season. Asensio faces competition from Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale, Eden Hazard and Vinicius Junior, but is expected to earn a position in the centre of the pitch.
