Liverpool fans held their breath for a moment on Tuesday after Virgil van Dijk went down after a collision during Netherland’s 6-1 win over Turkey. The 30-year-old was sent into the air after a collision with Halil Dervisoglu and he immediately grabbed his ankle. After the game Van Dijk assured that he was fine.
“I’m fine, luckily. I’m already over it”, he told the NOS. “Maybe because I am so big, they think I am acting, because when I go down, it goes in quite a slow way.” For Van Dijk and Liverpool it was the second injury scare in a week after he dislocated his finger in a duel with Norway (1-1) forward Erling Haaland last week.
Liverpool and the Netherlands are closely monitoring the health of Van Dijk after the defender missed a large part of last season due to a heavy knee injury. Holland boss Louis van Gaal decided to rest Van Dijk during the weekend when they recorded an easy 4-0 win over Montenegro. After six games in their group, the Dutch are leading the pack with 13 points.
